Today we visited Mount Edith Cavell in Jasper, Canada. There was red tape at the end of the trail, warning people not to approach lake due to ice falls and flash floods. Hundreds of people was ignoring it and they we handing out near the lake.

But one person decided to hike up the slope close to the waterfall. I was watching this person with my wife and was explaining why it is so reckless and dangerous:

Person was climbing steep slope with no traction devises or ice axe. The person had only poles.
There was no safe runout, if person would lose control, he would hit the rock at high speed.
There was huge seracs directly above the waterfall. High danger of ice fall.
There was a lot of rocks on the snow. Indication of recent rock falls.
It was noon on very hot day, chance of rock fall or ice fall was much higher during this time of the day.
Person was climbing right at the top of stream from waterfall which was under the snow, if snow would collapse person will be trapped in underground river.

And then two things happened. First - person slipped around 7/8th of the steep snow patch leading to the waterfall. Seems like he realized the mistake and abandoned the climb and started slowly descending. Much slower than ascending.

And the we heard serac broke, directly above the waterfall.

Person was very lucky, ice broke into small chunks and didn’t reach the person. But it triggered rock fall. We saw few rocks flew close to the person. The video shows one of the huge rocks flying by the person in 2-3 meters or so.

Person descended as fast as he could. Ana was back to relative safety. The ice and rocks was continuing falling into the waterfall base for many minutes.
