On the 10th anniversary of the war on Iraq, Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), Iraqi organizations, and the Center for Constitutional Rights joined forces to launch a national and international "Right to Heal" initiative for healing, reconciliation, reparations, and accountability, in part to prevent more illegal wars of occupation. Shown speaking at Harvard Law School, Iraq-war veteran Matthew Howard discusses the problems unique to the current generation of veterans (including multiple deployments, TBI injuries, military sexual trauma, a suicide epidemic, and an outrageous backlog at the Veterans Administration); the problems experienced by all veterans in a pro-military culture; and the partnership between Iraq veterans and the Iraqi people in seeking justice, reparations, and fair treatment for all victims of war. (Veterans of the war on Afghanistan have similarly joined forces with the people of Afghanistan, and have called an end to that war.) IVAW, of which Howard is communications director, was founded in 2004 and has always called for reparations to the Iraqi people--see the testimony of vets in "Winter Soldier"--and have been forced to advocate for themselves in calling attention to their post-war needs, including getting better health care and other services. The US military, Matthew notes, has never done a good job of understanding the real costs of war, or of treating the root causes of problems it itself has created. The Right-to-Heal initiative is aimed at filling those gaps and paving the way toward a better future world.
