Red Mars - fictional movie trailer

The 2020 high resolution remix of the trailer for a fictional blockbuster movie, or maybe even a multi-seasonal epic television series, based on Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars.

One hundred pioneers, on an epic journey to a New World. One day in a cinema near you...

Red Mars, first published in 1992, was the first book in Robinson's famous Mars Trilogy, which tells the story of the exploration, colonization and terraforming of Mars, seen through the eyes of some of the first hundred pioneers.

Despite various rumours over the years about a movie or TV series to be made based on the trilogy, this has never happened. This trailer shows a glimpse of what such a film adaptation might look like.

Although the voyage of the First Hundred took place in 2027, the current year 2020 was when the first crewed landing on Mars happened, in Robinson's timeline. And that's a good reason for the remake of this six year old trailer.

Ares, the spaceship on which the First Hundred travel to Mars, was build from re-used Space Shuttle rockets. This virtual reconstruction is based on Robinson's description in the book, as well as the original cover artwork by Don Dixon.
