देव और अजय पेशे से भाई, चोर और ठग हैं। शर्मीली भी एक चोर है जो एक पब में देव और अजय से मिलती है, उनके बटुए चुरा लेती है और भाग जाती है। रास्ते में कुछ गुंडे उस पर हमला करते हैं, लेकिन देव और अजय उसे बचा लेते हैं। शर्मिली देव के लड़ने के कौशल से प्रभावित है और मानती है कि वह एक अच्छा इंसान है, इसलिए उसे उससे प्यार हो जाता है। फिर, देव और अजय गलती से मोहन त्रिपाठी नाम के एक युवक की हत्या कर देते हैं। यह उनके दिमाग पर भारी पड़ता है, इसलिए वे मृतक का पता ढूंढते हैं और बदलापुर नामक उसके गांव की यात्रा करते हैं। उन्हें पता चला कि मोहन अपनी पढ़ाई करने और डॉक्टर बनने के लिए मुंबई गया था। वे मोहन के पिता, दीनानाथ त्रिपाठी, उसकी माँ, सुलक्षणा, एक बहन और मोहन की पत्नी से मिलते हैं, लेकिन उन्हें दुखद समाचार बताने में असमर्थ होते हैं। इसलिए उन्होंने झूठ बोला और त्रिपाठियों को बताया कि मोहन जीवित है, और वे उसके दोस्त हैं। वे त्रिपाठियों की सहायता के लिए रुकने का निर्णय लेते हैं। इसी गांव में अजय की मुलाकात गांव की लड़की मानसी से होती है और दोनों में प्यार हो जाता है। इसके बाद शर्मिली देव को ढूंढते हुए बदलापुर पहुंचती है। देव भी शर्मीली से प्यार करने लगता है।

Dev and Ajay are brothers, thieves and con men by profession. Sharmili is also a thief who meets Dev and Ajay in a pub, steals their wallets and runs away. Some goons attack her on the way, but Dev and Ajay rescue her. Sharmili is impressed with Dev's fighting skill and believes he is a good human being, so she falls in love with him. Then, Dev and Ajay accidentally kill a young man named Mohan Tripathi. This weighs heavily on their minds, so they find the address of the deceased and travel to his village called Badlapur. They learn that Mohan went to Mumbai to pursue his studies and become a doctor. They meet Mohan's father, Dinanath Tripathi, his mother, Sulakshana, a sister, and Mohan's wife, but are unable to tell them the sad news. So they lie and tell the Tripathis that Mohan is alive, and they are his friends. They decide to stay to assist the Tripathis. In this village Ajay meets Mansi, a village girl, and they fall in love. Sharmili then arrives in Badlapur seeking Dev. Dev also starts loving Sharmili..
