Chechnya - Demonstrations In Shali And Grozny

Chechens gathered in the war-torn capital Grozny on Monday (11/12) and in the rebel stronghold of Shali, to mark the first anniversary of the beginning of the war. Several hundred people
demonstrated in Shali, in southern Chechnya, demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops. And at a demonstration in central Grozny, more than a thousand protestors waved banners, urged an end to the war and demanded a pull-out of the thousands of Russian soliders still stationed inside Chechnya. To try to keep things calm in Grozny, Russian soldiers blocked off approaches to the city, and also limited access to the centre of the city.
