STORYLINE

US troops stepped up security at checkpoints throughout Baghdad on Thursday after a number of US marines were wounded when an apparent suicide attacker detonated explosives at a US checkpoint in the centre of the city.

The suicide attack occurred about 1930 (1630 GMT) near the Palestine Hotel, where most foreign journalists are staying.

Late on Thursday, APTN filmed US troops manning a checkpoint near the hotel.

The troops operated under difficult circumstances - there was no street lighting and they had to use a spotlight mounted on a military vehicle to light up the area.

Soldiers waved cyclists on with hand-held torches.

One soldier was filmed manning a tripod-mounted machinegun.
