Dawn broke at our Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) site with a karakia ahead of a hikoi carrying kaikōmako manawa tāwhi (Pennantia baylisiana) to the Far North to Ngāti Kuri where they will be welcomed on to Te Hiku o te Ika, Ngataki.

Pennantia baylisiana is so rare that there is only one wild tree left in its original habitat, the steep slopes of Manawa Tāwhi (Great Island), one of the Three Kings Islands.

This last remaining tree is female, but in the 1980s Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research's Dr Ross Beever found a way to produce ripe seeds without fertilisation.

The trees are taonga to Ngāti Kuri, and this morning 140 saplings departed to return to Ngāti Kuri rohe so they can be planted and grown on the mainland of Aotearoa.
