What is IP SLA?

Uses active traffic monitoring--the generation of traffic in a continuous, reliable, and predictable manner--for measuring network performance.
Router generates packets to check service levels
IP SLAs uses generated traffic to measure network performance between two networking devices
Used to measure and verify service levels
E.g. QoS, packet loss, jitter (interpacket delay variance)
Uses different types of probes depending on the application being monitored
ICMP
TCP
UDP
Can be tied into Enhanced Object Tracking to take actions
E.g. Reliable static routes

IP SLAs uses the Cisco RTTMON MIB for interaction between external Network Management System (NMS) applications and the IP SLAs operations running on the Cisco devices.


The Enhanced Object Tracking feature provides complete separation between the objects to be tracked and the action to be taken by a client when a tracked object changes. Thus, several clients such as HSRP, VRRP, or GLPB can register their interest with the tracking process, track the same object, and each take different action when the object changes.

Benefits of Enhanced Object Tracking
Increases the availability and speed of recovery of a network.
Decreases the number of network outages and their duration.
Enables client processes such as VRRP and GLBP to track objects individually or as a list of objects. Prior to the introduction of this functionality, the tracking process was embedded within HSRP

Tracking the Reachability of an IP SLAs IP Host

Procedure
Step 1: Configure IP SLA ICMP Echo Operations
ip sla 100

Step 2: Track the Reachability of an IP SLAs IP Host
track 100 ip sla 100 reachability
delay down 10 up 10

Step 3: Apply the tracking object to default routes
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.12.2 track 100
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.13.2 10

Verify
show track
show ip sla summary
show ip sla configuration 1
show ip sla statistics 1
ping
traceroute
show ip route
