Hi, I’m Kristin from POS Nation!

Today we’re going to talk about the most traditional component of a retail POS system.

A cash drawer is a metal box used to securely store cash.

Although we’re on our way to a cashless and contactless consumer economy, cash drawers are still a vital part of POS systems.

A cash drawer has compartments for different coins and bills, allowing cashiers to efficiently count change.

Cash drawers take the brunt of everyday wear and tear, so it’s common to replace tills, mounting brackets, and keys.

To break it down further, the till is the plastic insert in the cash drawer that holds the cash and coins.

Mounting brackets can be used to position cash drawers in a more secure and permanent spot.

And finally, keys are used to manually open cash drawers when you need access to them outside of a sale.

On the setup side, cash drawers are connected to receipt printers with a cable that looks like a phone line.

When a cash transaction is completed, a receipt will print, and the drawer will be prompted to open.

If you’re having trouble with your cash drawer not opening, it may not be connected to your receipt printer.

To increase productivity, we recommend having a two-till cash drawer system.

Many small businesses do drawer counts at the end of shifts, even if they’re still open and serving customers.

To avoid downtime while counting the drawer, retailers can simply swap tills and keep the register open.

At the end of the day, all cash drawers are pretty much the same.

They can offer different dimensions, or be built with different materials, but they all serve the same purpose.

The point of sale market can be overwhelming, so we hope this intro to cash drawers helps you navigate your hardware options!
