World’s First Laser Air Defence | Israel Deploys Iron Beam

Israel has officially become the first country in the world to induct a laser-based air defence system into active service. The system is called Iron Beam, and after nearly 10 years of development, it is now operational.

Iron Beam uses a 100-kilowatt high-energy laser, designed to neutralize drones, rockets, missiles, and mortar shells at an effective range of 8–10 kilometers. During testing, the system repeatedly demonstrated its ability to destroy aerial threats mid-air, without using traditional interceptor missiles.

The strategic importance of Iron Beam lies in cost and sustainability. Missile interceptors are expensive and finite, while a laser shot costs only the price of electricity. This makes Iron Beam ideal for high-volume threats, such as drone swarms and rocket salvos, where conventional missile-based air defence becomes economically unsustainable.

Iron Beam is expected to complement existing systems like Iron Dome, not replace them—creating a layered air defence network where lasers handle short-range threats and missiles are reserved for longer-range targets.

The message is clear: future wars will rely less on missiles and more on directed-energy weapons. With Iron Beam, Israel has taken the first real step into laser-based warfare.
