Last week I attended my first meeting of the Newark Water Coalition. I went to find out what is really happening with Newark's Water. What I found was a group of people , teachers, social workers, union members, concerned citizens, community activists, volunteering their time, and working very diligently to inform Newarkers that high levels of lead have been found in Newark's water. I also discovered that the problem is much larger than most of us know, is probably far beyond the capabilities of Newark or any city government to resolve, and according the Newark Water Council, requires federal government intervention.

I knew that high levels of lead were found in certain Newark schools, but what I did not realize was that a several Newark public school teachers were approached by the same non-profit organization that filed the law suit against Flint Michigan. Those Newarkers stepped up to the plate and became plaintiffs in the law suit. If it wasn't for these courageous citizens, we might still be in the dark and this extremely important discussion might not be happening at all. Most shocking though, was that according to the scientists and graduate students at Rutgers University, who have been testing Newark's Water, Newark's lead levels are much higher than anything seen in Flint Michigan. That was truly shocking to me. What is more strange is that the story has not broken nationally for some reason.

It has been reported on though. HBO's Vice News however reported on the lead in Newark's Water Supply in December 2018.  Much of what VICE NEWS reported was consistent with what I heard at the meeting. We have include the HBO story below along with my Q&A with Mr. Diaz.

I spoke with Mr. Diaz for a few minutes after the meeting, and he answered my questions in great detail.  Lead poisoning is a silent serious disease that causes irreparable damage to children. It's very serious business. Let's be informed and turn this around asa a community.
