In short, the mostly-plastic construction may feel "cheap" to those of you like me that grew up with metal microscopes, but the lighter weight is actually a bonus, and I think that the optics are very good. My first impressions from the plastic body weren't awesome, but after using it for a while, the plastic aspect just went away for me. I do wish that the eyepiece would stay in place if you tilt the microscope, but that's mostly just a nit on an otherwise nice piece of equipment at this price (currently $60). Overall, I think it's a good microscope for the money, and I think it would be a good gift for a child or young adult in school (or an older adult like me at 43).

The video shows off the hardware, and it includes a view through the eyepiece at the end (albeit a view using my camcorder). Below are just some highlights.

Pros:
(*) Optics are very clear and focus works perfectly
(*) Lighting from above and/or below provides good options for different samples
(*) I like that it comes with some samples already to get you started right away
(*) Comes with batteries and a power adapter to run the lights (and I've only used the batteries so far because I like the increased portability without the power adapter)
(*) Magnifies from 40x to 400x
(*) Despite being plastic, it has a solid build to it

Considerations (not really cons):
(*) Eyepiece slides out easily, so be careful if you pick up the microscope and tilt it
(*) It is mostly plastic, which is high quality plastic, but just be aware of that if you are a big fan of metal equipment

I mention in the video that I got a chance to use it to check out some "specs" floating in my coffee machine's water reservoir. That was an eye-opening experience...eeeyyy. Some things are perhaps better left unseen, but I'd rather know what they were than not. Stuff like that lifted this item from the "cool novelty" category to something that was genuinely useful. Btw, those specs are the same things that have been around my house every late Spring for years, but I never had anything that magnified enough for me to see them. I'm really glad that I finally got a chance to do that.
