This aligns with NIO’s initial projections for the Firefly’s production ramp-up, which began in April 2025.

For comparison, competitors like BYD Seagull or Wuling Bingo typically deliver within 2–3 weeks due to higher production volumes.

2. Reasons for the Delay

Production Scaling: Firefly’s manufacturing is still ramping up at NIO’s Hefei plant, which also produces ONVO and NIO-branded vehicles.

Battery Swap Readiness: The BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) program, which reduces the Firefly’s price by RMB 40,000 (~€4,700), only became available in August 2025 11. Early adopters may have delayed deliveries to opt for this cost-saving plan.

European Expansion Priority: NIO redirected some Firefly units to Europe (e.g., Norway, Netherlands) for summer 2025 launches, slightly constraining domestic supply.

3. Customer Sentiment and Market Response

Positive Reception: Despite wait times, Firefly’s RMB 119,800 (~$16,470) starting price and 260-mile CLTC range have attracted urban buyers, with 3,932 units delivered in June 2025.

Criticism: Some customers expressed frustration over lack of transparency on exact delivery dates, a common issue for new EV models.

4. Future Outlook

Production Boost: NIO aims to reduce wait times to 2 weeks by Q4 2025 as Firefly’s production stabilizes.

Global Expansion: Right-hand-drive models (for UK/Southeast Asia) will launch by October 2025, potentially straining capacity further.
