AN SNP minister has admitted it may be cheaper to scrap one of the delayed ferries and start again - but vowed to push ahead with the costly vessel anyway.

Neil Gray told MSPs that work would continue to finish the second as yet unnamed Hull 802 as it would take too long to start again.

He confirmed he had “provided written authority” to civil servants to secure the build of the vessel after the accounting officer warned it was “difficult” for him to “gain sufficient assurance that value for money” could “be achieved”.

CalMac is currently waiting for two new ferries - Glen Sannox and Hull 802 - which are five years overdue with the original price tag of £97million soaring to around £300m.
