Here's a special treat for you all. Remember Aureal, the innovative soundcard company that had HRTF headphone audio and wavetraced reverb decades ahead of their time? Well, it turns out that the A3D drivers also came with 5 rare MIDIs to test out the MIDI driver. There is virtually no information on these MIDIs online, nor are there any credits within the metadata inside the files.

While I did buy an Aureal Vortex 2 SQ2500 card for pretty cheap years ago, I have no working Windows 98 rig to test it on. Instead, I converted the au30gm.arl that came with the drivers into a soundfont that could be read by VirtualMIDISynth. Compared to a real recording of onestop.mid, some of the synths sound a bit too thin. You'll hear it on the second track in this video. It's unfortunate, but I would rather have something close to what the composers originally intended than just recording the Roland Sound Canvas VA again. The sample set is actually not half-bad; better than the AWE32 and much better than the default GS Wavetable Synth.

I can't say these are my favorite MIDIs ever written, but it's still well worth having them archived online so they're not forgotten. I also apologize for some pops in the recording caused by latency. I generally record a separate audio track in a DAW for this very reason.
