The objective of the Bureau is to establish and promulgate standards for imported and locally produced goods, promote standardization, conformity assessment and metrology in industry and commerce and promote standards in public and industrial welfare, health and safety, amongst others.

Internationally-recognized procedures for development of standards i.e., ISO/IEC Guide 21-2005 and Annex 3 of the WTO TBT Agreement on Code of Good Practice for the Preparation, Adoption and Application of Standards were observed. In line with the foregoing, the Bureau constitutes Technical Committees composed of stakeholders drawn from Government, Private Sector, Academia, Trade, Professional/experts and Consumer Associations to develop standards.
