The #acromioclavicular joint is crucial, connecting your collarbone or clavicle to your shoulder blade and providing stability for shoulder movement. When you fall directly on your shoulder, the impact can tear the ligaments holding this joint together, causing that telltale step-off deformity. Not all AC separations need surgery. Grades I-II typically heal well with conservative treatment like rest, ice, and targeted Physical Therapy. Grade III injuries are more controversial - some athletes do great without surgery, while others benefit from reconstruction. Higher grade injuries (IV-VI) may require surgical intervention to relieve symptoms and restore stability.
