Chandigarh has scripted history by becoming India’s first slum-free city after clearing Shahpur Colony on 30 September 2025. Over the past year, the administration reclaimed 50+ acres of prime land worth ₹1,250 crore, transforming it for housing, commercial, and institutional projects. Importantly, eligible families were rehabilitated under the Small Flats Scheme 2006, ensuring dignity and stability. Despite challenges and protests, Chandigarh’s model shows how structured planning, strong governance, and timely rehabilitation can reshape urban landscapes. This milestone sets a national benchmark for sustainable and inclusive urban development.
