Commercial for the Virginia Beach-based Home Quarters Warehouse (often known simply as HQ) featuring deals on ceiling fan bulbs and chandeliers.



The chain (begun in 1984 by W.R. Grace & Co.) had been acquired by Hechinger in December 1987, under which the chain experienced expansion to compete with home improvement chains such as Lowe's, Home Depot and Builders Square. Things seemed to be going well for HQ and Hechinger until 1995; when Hechinger ran into financial trouble and started scaling operations back (going to the point of moving HQ headquarters from Virginia Beach to Hechinger's home base in Landover, MD). Two years later, Hechinger sold HQ to Leonard Green & Partners of Los Angeles, and by September HQ was merged with the equally troubled Builders Square chain (which Leonard Green & Partners had acquired from Kmart). However, the writing was on the wall and on June 11, 1999 the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (with the plan being to close or sell off stores to the Home Depot while rebranding any remaining Builders Square stores as HQ), and in the end the reorganization efforts failed; leading to Hechinger's liquidation by September of 1999.
