U.S. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump planted a maple tree on the South Lawn of the White House, Wednesday, April 22, in recognition of Earth Day and Arbor Day.

Trump also said that, in line with his administration's guidelines, the federal government will work with states to reopen national parks and public lands, "for the American people to enjoy."

Trump was also joined by the Secretary of the Department of Interior, David Bernhardt, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and the EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler at the small White House ceremony.

The theme of Earth Day 2020 is climate action, and the Earth Day Network is urging hundreds of millions to join in a huge global social media conversation, including ways to pressure governments to keep their commitments to the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement to fight global warming.

April 22 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, when the very question of whether the planet can survive emerged for the first time from the minds of so-called eccentrics and flower children of the 1960s into national consciousness.
