St Mungo’s uncovers one of its eighteen units operated with government enforcement squads.

Until 2016, some St Mungo’s units operated with the United Kingdom Home Office to inspire homeless EU and non-EU nationals who were homeless to accept “faithful choices” to get them off the roads. The charity declares that this tactic did occasionally include distributing essential information about migrants with the Home Office without their permission. Although this was legal under data protection law.

In the end of the year 2016, the United Kingdom government announced a new rule which stated rough sleeping in itself as a violation of European Union rules. This denotes that migrants sleeping rough were likely to more swift detention and removal with less chances to find substitute way out. At this position some St Mungo’s managers approved that allying with the United Kingdom Home Office would be a last course of action and data would no longer be public without permission.

The CEO of the homeless charity St Mungo’s has made an apology for providing information about immigrant rough sleepers with the Home Office.

In the past, it was exposed that St Mungo’s associated with United Kingdom Home Office squads when they went out on the looking to search for rough sleepers considered to be in the United Kingdom unlawfully to take into custody and deport.

At the time St Mungo’s rejected that it forwarded either the locations where rough sleepers present or private information about them to United Kingdom Home Office enforcement units without their permission. Many of the rough sleepers who were recognised by immigration enforcement units were consequently by force removed from the United Kingdom. Many of these removals have now been discovered to be illegal and the United Kingdom Home Office is providing compensations.

The charity at present has made an apology after an internal audit discovered that one of its 18 outsource units constantly shared information with the United Kingdom Home Office from July 2016 till late 2017. Providing information about migrant rough sleepers was in breach of St Mungo’s own policy at the time.

Lately Howard Sinclair, chief executive of St Mungo’s, said: “Our strategy now is clear – we do not share information with the United Kingdom Home Office without the migrant’s complete and notified consent except we are lawfully forced to do so.” He further stated that presently aid for migrant rough sleepers to get off the roads was “far from satisfactory”.

The Public Interest Law Centre (PILC), which effectively confronted the United Kingdom Home Office in the high court about its rules to deport migrant rough sleepers and has elevated worries about St Mungo’s part in these enforcement raids, appreciated the apology.

“This confession was long overdue. The discoveries of St Mungo’s internal evaluation have justified the work of migrants and homeless rights activists who have spent decades trying to hold the aid organisations to account for working together with United Kingdom immigration enforcement in the detention and deportation of homeless people,” a PILC spokesman said.

He further mentioned that, “St Mungo’s has confessed deceiving the media, activists and, most importantly, migrant rough sleepers about the way they operated with the United Kingdom Home Office. The loss done in terms of belief may well be irreversible”.
