Dr. Siegel was one of the earlier educators on gentle parenting strategies in the form that the concepts are shared today. Here he talks about our expectations as parents and the fact that we will make mistakes. We all do. Even the experts. And that the important thing to figure out is how to repair with our child. Mistakes are okay as long as we go back, acknowledge our mistake, and reconnect with our children.

He goes on to talk about a concept that he calls the 4 S's. These are "see" your child, "soothe" your child, provide "safety" for your child, and ultimately create an environment of "secure attachment" for your child. Dr. Siegel suggests that the first 3 S's allow us to develop that close, connected relationship with our child if we are able to offer them on a consistent basis. The goal is, through this effort to show up for our child, to ensure that our children always feel secure in their relationship with us. If we can do that, our children will always feel supported and loved. The result will be a beautifully connected parent-child relationship.
