A few weeks before the Long Way Roond motorcycle trip to visit 24 Scottish mountain rescue bases, Si, Lizzie and Gyp the collie were involved in a road traffic accident caused by a careless delivery van driver. The bend that the accident happened at is colloquially known in nearby Meltham and Holmfirth as 'Crash Corner'. Although we didn't know it was an accident hotspot at the time, it has apparently seen many similar incidents over the years.

The driver that hit our Berlingo van was descending the hill from Holmfirth and didn't understand that the road bent around to his left. Unfortunately, another road leading off from the apex of the bend can make it look as if the road leads straight on. Because of that, several fairly new chevron warning signs have been installed but despite that precaution, the delivery driver was going too fast to make the bend once he realised it was there and crashed straight into us.

One improvement that could easily be made would be to push the 30mph speed sign further back up the hill – when traffic is only a couple of hundred metres away from the bend it's still legal to be travelling at 60mph which is ludicrous.

Advice to anyone headed up the hill towards the bend is to check for traffic coming down the hill too fast and hold back to avoid what happened to us...
