BR in the 1980s - The Alan Harrison Collection Part 41 Dawlish Warren, Cockwood Harbour Newton Abbot

During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. Part 41 sees Alan concluding his visit to Devon with a series of shots around Dawlish Warren, Cockwood Harbour, Dawlish and Newton Abbot. During this period, Dawlish Warren was still controlled by a fine array of lower quadrant semaphore signals which can be seen in operation. At one point, we can even hear the bell codes ringing out in the nearby signal box! Alan filmed a fine procession of trains at Dawlish Warren station, including Class 142 Skipper unit, 45106 westbound on Mk1s, 50010 Monarch on AC Mk2s, 50050 Fearless on an up parcels working and a pair of class 31/4s on a rake of WCML Mk3s forming 1M65, the 1625 SO Paignton to Liverpool Lime Street. A class 33 passes hauling a pair of Railfreight Class 31s and Scotrail liveried 47461 Charles Rennie Mackintosh heads west. Alan then moves to Cockwood Harbour for a couple of shots of IC125 HSTs before returning briefly to Dawlish for a wonderful shot of 50047 Swiftsure pulling away with a down working. Alan then travels to Newton Abbot for his penultimate shots in the West Country. In rather unpleasant conditions, 50040 Leviathon heads an Up working before 50047 arrives with a breakdown train. The crane is required to re-rail a pair of Railfreight Class 31s that have come to grief just west of the station! Before making his way back North, Alan films a couple of shots at Exeter St David’s Station. We see variety of locos on shed before 50042 Triumph arrives with a train heading for the west.
