I really liked the simplicity of the design, and it seems to be working very nice for such a simple machine.

Modifications to the original design;

Larger X,Y and Z range, effective range: 380mm x 380mm x 55mm

Standard profiles 500mm and 600mm were used.

I didn’t like the idea of the stepper motors carrying all the axial milling loads, like the way the #dremelcnc was originally designed. I therefore redesigned all 3D printed brackets so that KFL08 bearings can be used for the spindles. In combination with anti-backlash nuts this results in a quite rigid setup, and the motors only provide the torque for the spindles now.

I also incorporated new X-axis carriers, in order to get the dremel spindle in line with the linear Y-axis bearings. In theory, this should result in less vertical play of the actual dremel bit. They also raise the Z axis, to be more inline with the actual achievable movement of the Z-axis.

Due to the way the 3D printed parts are constructed, warping of the parts (everything was printed in PETG) could result in miss-aligment of the linear bearing. For that reason, I machined some 22mm tubes on my mini-lathe to accept the linear bearings. These are now very well aligned, and this assembly is the pressed into the 3D printed parts. Everything runs very smooth.

Some other features were incorporated like the usage of a modular Z-axis carrier. Swapping to a Laser engraver, dragknife or different spindle setup would be very easy to do with this setup. Based on https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:275... and http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:599893

The dustguards were also 3D printed, instead of using aluminium profiles.
The wastboard is split down the middle parallel to the X-axis, to be able to remove it without disassembling the whole CNC machine.

Dragchains were added by screwing them directly to the 3D printed parts. The lentgh of the dragchain is chosen in order to don't have to cut the standard motor cables that came with the stepper motors.

There is also a fan mounted to the dremel shaft ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:187... ) to keep the toolpath clear of chips. Very effective!

On initial tests I found that I lost connection to the Arduino at random moment during milling. Some research learned that you have to use an Arduino UNO with an 16u2 USB chip in stead of the CH340. This solved all my connection time-out problems.
