It's good for every parent to have a thermometer at their house just in case their kids start to get sick so that you know if they really do have a fever or not, if you're suspicious of one. There's so many different types out there on the market, and you asked a really good question. What are the best types? Ones that won't break the bank. And it really all boils down to 3 different categories. There's the digital multi-use thermometers, the temporal artery scanners, and the tympanic ones that detect it in their ear. Now actually the simplest ones are the best ones, and they are very cost effective. The digital multi-use ones can take a baby's temperature either rectally, under the armpit, or in their mouth. Now for obvious reasons, you wouldn't want to use the multi-use thermometer in the mouth and also in the rectum. So some parents buy 2, one to use in the mouth and one to use in the rectum, and they label them so that there is no confusion. Now for babies, the most accurate way to get their temperature is rectally. It's not fun for anyone, but if you call the pediatrician ask them what their temperature is, that's probably what they're going to want to know, especially if it's pretty high. You can try to get it in their mouth or under their armpit, but they are less accurate.

Now the tympanic membrane ones and also the temporal artery scanners are a little more expensive, but they have been proven to be accurate for babies that are older. The good old digital multi-use ones are still the best for babies who are 3 months of age and younger than that.
