Hello, friends. We always say that the credit for a big film's success should go to the small-role actors just as much as it does to the main stars. In reality, these so-called "small-role" actors are not small at all. Their stories are just as significant as any superstar's, but rarely do we get to hear them. Today, we're here to tell one such story.
On Hindi Radio today, we bring you the story of Raman Kumar, an actor who appeared for just a few seconds in the film "Deewaar." You might not believe it, but he isn't just an actor; he's also a renowned filmmaker. You're probably thinking he might be some minor director, but you'd be wrong. Have you seen the classic film "Saath Saath," starring Farooq Shaikh and Deepti Naval? It was written and directed by none other than Raman Kumar. He is a prominent name in the world of theatre. So, let's dive into his story, and I am sure for most of you, this will be the first time you've heard his name.
Raman Kumar was born in Amritsar and spent his childhood near the Golden Temple. Later, his father moved to Mumbai to work in the transport business and eventually brought the entire family over. Raman completed his schooling at Guru Nanak School and then attended Khalsa College. We've mentioned this college in many of our videos because of its famous theatre scene. This is where Raman learned acting and made a name for himself in the world of theatre, working alongside Ramesh Talwar.
Even while working in theatre and for IPTA, he never thought about working in films. However, an opportunity came his way during his third year of college when he met Satyen Bose, the director of classic films like "Dosti" and "Masoom." Bose offered him a small role in his film "Mere Bhaiya," which marked the beginning of his film journey. One day, while visiting the set of "Deewaar," Raman learned that the actor for two scenes hadn't shown up. He immediately spoke to Yash Chopra and flawlessly performed both scenes, which he shared with Shashi Kapoor. Talking about his acting career, Raman says that acting was just a coincidence; his true passion was always directing.
However, becoming a director isn't easy. He went on to join Pune's FTII for a three-year directing course. While there, he wrote a script for his final exam, which he later pitched to NFDC for a loan to make his own film. To his surprise, the committee approved his script, and it went on to become "Saath Saath," one of the most successful films of Farooq Shaikh and Deepti Naval's careers.
Raman Kumar’s career didn't stop there. After "Saath Saath," he directed semi-hit films like "Rahi" and "Parbat Ke Us Paar." As the 90s approached, he transitioned to television. He directed the 1992 comedy serial "Yeh Duniya Gazab Ki," starring the great Rakesh Bedi. He was also the host of the popular quiz show "Mashoor Mahal."
