Covering Approximately 9,200,000 Square Kilometres In Total Surface Area, Sahara Desert Is The Largest Hot Desert On Earth. Sahara Desert Is Bigger Than Contiguous USA And Is Actually Bigger Then Europe If We Exclude The European Part Of RUSSIA.

Sahara Desert Covers Approximately 30.3 % Of The Total Surface Area Of The Continent Of Africa Or Nearly 6.2 % Of The Earth's Total Land Area.


The Sahara Desert Covers Much Of North Africa And Stretches From The Atlantic Ocean To The Red Sea, Spanning Across 11 Countries Which Are Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia And Western Sahara. The Sahara Desert Is The World’s Largest Hot Desert, But It Is Smaller Than The Arctic And Antarctic Cold Deserts. The Length Of The Sahara Desert Is 4,800 Km And The Maximum Width Is 1,800 Km.


The Atlas Mountains In Northwestern Africa, Separates The Mediterranean And Atlantic Coastlines From The Sahara Desert. The Mountains Extend Roughly 2500 Km In Length From Morocco To Tunisia. In The South, The Sahel Region, Acts As A Transition Zone Between The Dry Areas Of The Sahara And The Tropical Savanna Grassland Areas. The Sahel Is A Wide Stretch Of Land Running Completely Across North - Central Africa, On The Southern Edges Of The Sahara Desert And Has An Length Of Roughly 5,900 Km.

One Of The Least - Densely Populated Regions On Earth.

If We Exclude The Densely Populated Nile River Valley, The Sahara Desert Is Estimated To Contain Roughly 2.5 Million Inhabitants, Making It One Of The Least Densely Populated Regions In The World, With A Population Density Of Less Than 1 Person Per Square Mile Or 0.4 Person Per Square Kilometre . People Who Live In The Sahara Are Predominantly Nomads, Who Move From Place To Place Depending On The Seasons.
