Each year, Elizabeth C. Hamblet (college learning disabilities specialist and author of a book on preparing students with disabilities for college success) hosts a webinar by Jane Sarouhan, co-founder of J2 Guides, a gap experience consulting group. This year, they were joined by Caitlin Garman of Broad Futures, an internship program. They discussed:

• Common misconceptions about gap years and the benefits of hands-on, real-world experiences for all learners, including skills students gain
• Reasons why students take a gap year, including having time to address academic burnout, developing independent living skills, and improving mental health.
• Families’ concerns about losing academic momentum
• The importance of finding the right fit for each student and of being transparent about students’ specific needs and medications
• The goals of the Broad Futures program, including building confidence, independence, and real-world experience. Garman shares a case study of a student who benefited from the program
