Women In Jazz - Meet Drummer Shirazette Tinnin

This is from Part 1 of Echoes of Tradition which explores the censorship of Native American contributions to the genesis of jazz music through the intersection of trauma and oppression of men and women based on their race, gender and sexual orientation.

Shirazette "She Beats" Tinnin drums for Dee Dee Bridgewater and teaches as an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music. Her drumming is crazy awesome and she is a soulful human being.

I have so much gratitude to offer all of the people, women and men, who shared their stories with me for this film. Some stories are fun, and some are painful.

Shirazette, outside on break at a Brooklyn studio recording session with the all-woman band Hera, shares with us a story of discrimination based on her sexual orientation.

This clip is from the upcoming Women In Jazz: We Are Here, and its exciting prequel Echoes of Tradition.

Special thanks to Producer Terri Pederson and her Tidal Breeze Jazz Arts in Colorado Springs.

A thrilling and provocative music documentary exploring the role women have played in the development of jazz and their experiences working as leaders in a male dominated music industry.

This film examines contemporary efforts to identify and address the issues of a noticeable gender gap on today’s stages and the barriers that stand as obstacles to girls and women in both the educational institutions and in the professional world of modern jazz.

An empowering film with an emphasis on live performance and candid interviews, We Are Here: Women In Jazz amplifies the voices of those who are navigating this profession with great success and joy despite the tremendous hardship and challenges they have faced along the journey.

Featuring some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz: Grammy winners The Manhattan Transfer, Dianne Reeves and Endea Owens; Ingrid Jensen; Veronica Swift; Japanese alto saxophonist Erena Terakubo; Tanya Darby; Andromeda Turre; Rudy Van Gelder studio owner Maureen Sickler; Grammy winning hip hop producer Ervin Pope; Rachel Gould (vocalist with Chet Baker); bassist Eric Baines from the band Chicago (Keiko Matsui and Dwight Yokum); Indonesian pianist Nita Aartsen; Native American jazz musicians Julia Keefe, Delbert Anderson and Chantil Dukart.

We Are Here: Women In Jazz is an exploration of feminine and masculine energy in transgenre and transformative improvisation.
