ATI Foundation: Field Trip to the ZOO!

Some of our students at the DAILI (Differently Abled Independent Living Initiative) program visited the toronto zoo yesterday! We had such a fun-filled day, filled with love and laughter. All of us commuted together via TTC, and it was the first time for many of the students! We did lots of exercise by walking and took periodic breaks on the zoomobile. We loved seeing different animals, and enjoyed eating ice cream under the warm sun.

Annai Thantha Illam Foundation (ATI Foundation) is a nonprofit cross-disability organization that empowers Canadian Tamils with disabilities to realize their potential and achieve their goals. Annai Thantha Illam is a Tamil phrase that translates literally to “a home provided by the mother”. Since our foundation in 2014, our mission has continued to be focused on providing a nexus of support for both the Canadian Tamils, who face challenges with mental and physical conditions, but also their caregivers, who are often in need of respite and supportive care. Having a person with a disability in a family can be very challenging, especially in a community with cultural and language issues that may hamper access to community services. We hope to continue developing programs and initiatives that help minimize these systematic barriers.

For the past two years, ATI has been running a weekly day-program called DAILI (Differently Abled Independent Living Initiative) for this disabled community, to provide support services for our clients, including training individuals to perform day-to-day functions, engage in occupational and recreational activities, and provide employment training.
