The most important word in carpentry and woodworking is this: KERF! In this short video, The Honest Carpenter will explain why the word kerf is so important to carpenters and woodworkers.

The word "kerf" dates back nearly 6,000 years to the late-neolithic period, and in all that time the meaning has changed very little. It means:

KERF: the groove or notch made by the cutting action of a saw.
(It sometimes also refers to the width of a saw blade at the teeth.)

The word kerf is so important because many beginners fail to realize that a saw blade has a certain width, and that it will PERMANENTLY REMOVE this width from anything you cut. Therefore, it must be factored into measurements. (The kerf should not be TAKEN OUT OF material you want to leave.)

Kerf is also extremely important to saw safety. When the kerf closes around a blade, it can slow that blade down, bogging down the motor. This is called "binding," and it can cause the blade or saw to leap towards the operator! For this reason, the kerf should always be kept stable to prevent saw blade binding.
