Think of the Volkswagen Atlas as the modern interpretation of the station wagon: the family-friendly transport has three rows, seating for up to seven passengers, can tow up to 5000 pounds, and wraps it all up in a handsome if entirely unexciting exterior. Legroom in the second row is impressive, as is the overall cargo room with the second and third rows folded flat. That's good, because although the interior is accommodating and highly functional, it lacks any genuine style or wow factor. The sole powertrain is a 269-hp turbocharged inline-four engine bolted to an eight-speed automatic that provides sufficient, if not neck-straining acceleration. Front-wheel drive is standard on the SE and SE with Technology, but all-wheel drive is available; the Peak Edition SE and higher trims get AWD standard. The Atlas is a fully capable people hauler, but competitors, including the Kia Telluride, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and Mazda CX-90, keep moving the style and appointment bar higher. However, if the Atlas sounds appealing but you’re looking for an SUV with a dash of style, check out the Atlas Cross Sport which forgoes the third row but has a much sportier profile.

What's New for 2025?

After a significant refresh for 2024, the Atlas rolls into 2025 with only mild changes. Upgraded wireless device charging is standard, and SEL Premium R-Line trims get some additional luxury touches, including perforated headrest upholstery, four-way adjustable lumbar support, and a front-seat massaging function. Two new available colors include Mountain Lake Blue, Avocado Green, and Pure Grey, the latter two previously available only on the Atlas Peak Edition trim. Most 2025 models with an active subscription to VW's Car-Net connected vehicle software will offer an available voice assistant powered by ChatGPT.
