Awakening is an incredibly unique part of this 5-song EP, "From Eternity." Technically, it was the very first song written, going all the way back to 1991 when I was in college at Anderson University as a Music Business major. I purchased the album, “Symphony Sessions” from David Foster, and loved it! I was so inspired by that album that I sat down and wrote this song as a tribute to this type of powerful, anthemic instrumental music.
This song represents the incredible, miraculous moment when a person’s spiritual eyes are opened for the first time to the idea that relationship with God is the answer to every struggle they’ve encountered in life. None of us can make this happen for ourselves, and no one who can make this happen for another. Only by the Word of God and the Spirit of God can a person come alive to the Truth of God. It is a beautiful moment that forever institutes a change of perspective that will mark a person for the rest of their days.
Awakening is probably the most unique of the 5 songs, because of its style and because it is not written with a traditional tempo in mind. It is very free flowing and played in what is called "rubato," which is, “the temporary disregarding of strict tempo to allow an expressive quickening or slackening, usually without altering the overall pace.” Rubato is typically something interjected into a song temporarily, but Awakening is pretty much meant to be played entirely in this format, making it challenging to transcribe into sheet music and even more challenging to "key-sync" for the music video.
Amazingly, I took this song on the road for Anderson University with 2 amazing traveling companions in the summer of 1991 as part of the group, Witness. I played it each night at the peak of our concerts as a special song during the offering moment. It was well received back then, but never in a million years did I think I would write 4 more songs and release them years later as a stirring EP entitled, “From Eternity.” This song started it all!
Acts 9:3-6, 17-20
3 As he [Saul] was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?” 5 “Who are you, lord?” Saul asked. And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! 6 Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
17 So Ananias went and found Saul. He laid his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Instantly something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized. 19 Afterward he ate some food and regained his strength. Saul stayed with the believers[d] in Damascus for a few days. 20 And immediately he began preaching about Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is indeed the Son of God!”
