We've come so far... But we have a long way to go!

that is the story of Project D8233 to date, beginning with a group of like minded people asking questions about the fate of D8233 at The Railway Heritage centre at Crewe in 2005 on Preserved Diesels chat forum to the restart of the restoration and relocation of the loco back to the East Lancashire Railway in Feb 2006, since then work has been progressing slowly but surely, the cooler group was the first area of the loco to get renovated, then a replacement engine was sourced as the original was stripped down to a bare block and needed mega money to fix it, an engine swap in Oct 2007 saw the current engine (55902) inserted and the generator removed, a start-up attempt of the engine using the fitted air starters I May 2008 Failed and it was our first major set back but worse was to come during the latter part of the year when the generator went away for overhaul and was found to be in need of some serious and very expensive repairs, so the Generator appeal was launched and the Genny was fixed and finally returned to the loco in April of this year but not before the Cab & No2 end body sections had been removed for shot blasting in March giving the loco its current unusual appearance.

work to get the engine ready for its second start-up attempt has been feverish in the last couple of months, The start of this engine is a triumph for us and everyone who has assisted on the project over the years, the engine took a while to warm up but the exhausts cleared towards the end if the 2nd run, there was a slight issue with one of the fuel pumps in the L/H side not working properly, and aside from a few minor oil leaks this has been a hugely successful test not only of the engine but also the work done restoring the associated ancillary systems.

Of course the work does not stop here? this restoration is barely half way done, there is major work to be done to restore the locos Electrical, Traction & Braking systems all of which are currently missing not to mention the rest of the bodywork repairs, so We appeal for help with our ongoing task, so if anyone wishes to donate to the group or would be interested in joining the team restoring the loco then please get in touch through our website:
