The White Ribbon (2009) Breakdown

Still catching up on movies I saw over the winter. Hopefully it isn't too obvious that I made this video a month after watching the video, although that is why it is so short.

I mainly focus on the superficial morality of the church here, but this is only one of the systems of thought that the movie looks at. Something similar is going on with the Baron and the town's feudal economy. Consider the son of the woman who is killed while working for the Baron. His father is totally committed to the system and is incensed at his son's response. What is his son's crazy suggestion? Simply to stand up for the death of his mother. His father is so attached to the system that a simple more action seems blasphemous and his son is cast out as a righteous pariah.

Something very similar happens when Martin sees his lover's father. The father has particular understanding of how things should be done and Martin's regression makes him a deviant. Martin is an outsider to several entrenched systems of thought.
