The Supreme Court of India is the highest judicial authority in the country. It has wide-ranging powers under the Constitution of India, which can be broadly divided as follows:

1. Original Jurisdiction(Article 131)

The Supreme Court can directly hear certain cases without them coming through lower courts:

Disputes between the Union and one or more States.
Disputes between two or more States.
Disputes between Union and States on one side and other States on the other side.

2. Appellate Jurisdiction

The Supreme Court hears appeals against decisions of High Courts in:

Constitutional matters (if High Court certifies that the case involves a substantial question of law).
Civil matters.
Criminal matters.
Special leave to appeal (Article 136) – the Court can grant permission to appeal against any judgment of any court/tribunal in India (except military tribunals).


3. Writ Jurisdiction (Article 32)

Citizens can directly approach the Supreme Court for the enforcement of Fundamental Rights.
Court can issue writs like Habeas Corpus, Mandamus, Prohibition, Certiorari, and Quo-Warranto.


4. Advisory Jurisdiction(Article 143)

The President of India can seek the opinion of the Supreme Court on important questions of law or matters of public importance.

5 Power of Judicial Review

The Supreme Court can review laws passed by Parliament and State legislatures.
If any law violates the Constitution (especially Fundamental Rights), it can be declared null and void.


6 .Court of Record (Article 129 & 141)

Its judgments, orders, and proceedings are recorded as legal precedents.
It has the power to punish for contempt of court.


7. Guardian of the Constitution

Ensures that the Constitution is followed in letter and spirit.
Protects Fundamental Rights.
Maintains the balance of power between the Centre and States.
