Many product companies claim to have AI capabilities when they actually don't.

I like to call this “AI washing”.

But why does this happen? I think it’s often due to market pressure and the desire to appear innovative.

The majority of products rely on standard, deterministic approaches. And this isn’t a bad thing! Deterministic software delivers 100% accurate results every time. However, some companies market these products as AI-powered, even when they're not.

At VisibleThread, we like to be honest and transparent:

We do use AI, but it’s a different kind, pre-generative AI. In fact, we've used AI models for the past decade to tackle complex problems. However, it’s not the new, generative type of AI. (We’ll be layering in #GenAI in early 2024, but only for certain tasks.)

So, if you’re considering a product that claims to have AI capabilities, take a step back:

Try to understand what the AI actually does, what it’s role is, and if the technology itself is even suitable for that use case.

Personally, I’m not for or against AI. I believe AI is great for certain things (like tasks that involve content generation) but totally inappropriate for others.

So, be cautious. Don’t blindly listen to the AI-centric marketing narratives. Dig deeper when evaluating any product. Especially during this phase of AI hype.

And PS: I don’t know if “AI washing” is actually a real term. I just thought it made sense for what I’m seeing. 😄
