The World Endurance Championship is exploring the use of hydrogen fuel in conventional piston engines. Last year, Toyota debuted a hydrogen racer and a hydrogen-fuelled Corolla for demonstration laps. This year, Renault-owned Alpine has introduced the Alpenglow, a hydrogen-burning engine race car. While hydrogen power for passenger cars has faced challenges, the commercial and construction industries, as well as the endurance racing world, see hydrogen as a potential solution for reducing CO2 emissions without the weight and range limitations of battery-electric technology. Toyota is continuing its hydrogen research and development, focusing on providing fuel-cell power for marine, rail, bus, truck, and commercial markets. Toyota's Zaventem technical center has developed a fuel-cell-powered version of the Hilux pickup truck, which emits only hot water from its exhaust. The pickup has a range of about 365 miles and a full one-tonne payload capacity. Toyota is also in talks with potential users, including its own factories, to further expand the use of hydrogen fuel. In Europe, there is a push for decarbonizing the gas market with low-carbon gases, including hydrogen, as part of the EU's Green Deal. The aim is to provide hydrogen fuel stations along Europe's motorway network at regular intervals by 2030.
