Van Buren is the working title of the original Fallout 3 game, which was under development by Black Isle Studios, a division of Interplay Entertainment. However, Interplay closed down this studio due to financial difficulties in 2003, leading the game to be cancelled. The intellectual property of the Fallout series was sold to Bethesda Softworks, who started development of their own version of Fallout 3. It was released in 2008.

In Van Buren, the game would have begun in a prison cell. You had the choice to be innocent because of some misunderstanding, or to be a criminal and take bonus traits. Waking up after an explosion, the cell doors are open.

The plot of the tech demo is not connected to the main storyline, it was intended to be included as a tutorial. So you start as a citizen escorted to a vault by Corporal Armstrong. To reach the vault, you must fight communist insurgents. After entering, you are supposed to help turn on the life support system.

The tech demo has many bugs, as it is an unfinished game. So, there are many things that don't work or may lead to a crash. It uses the Jefferson Engine, which was made for Baldur's Gate 3, but was never used. The name Van Buren derives from Martin Van Buren, the 8th president of the USA.
