China's internet giant Baidu will launch a highly automatic self-driving car model as early as the next year, said its CEO Li Yanhong on Thursday in Beijing.

The car may not be able to run without drivers on any road in all circumstance, but it can realize self-driving under most conditions, according to Li.

Li Yanhong, or Robin Li, is the co-founder and CEO of Baidu and also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). He made the remarks during a press briefing on the sidelines of the first session of 13th CPPCC National Committee when asked about the mass production schedule of unmanned cars.

Li says he's very optimistic about the future of driverless cars, and predicted that self-driving cars will be available on common roads in three to five years. In fact, Baidu is now working on a tight schedule of mass production for such cars.
