Another great first-timer at the Roode Bioscoop. This new trio with José Soares, Harmen Fraanje, and Sun Mi Hong blew a fresh, new wind through our theater. These players have made name for themselves through the years but have never played together in this setting. Luckily, there is much more to come so keep an eye out for them!
José Soares is a jazz saxophone player and composer from Portugal currently living in Amsterdam where he pursued a Masters's degree at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. His musical endeavors started at the age of 6 with the first instrument being the saxophone. Soares has a Conservatory and a pre- bachelor degree in classical music from Conservatório de Música David de Sousa and Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho. In 2010 he began his jazz studies in the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo of which he holds a Bachelor's degree. José is a recurring presence in the national jazz scene and besides his Quartet and his Amsterdam Trio, Soares is part of several award-winning acclaimed Portuguese bands.
Born and raised in In-Cheon, Korea; Sun-Mi has a unique perspective of life after her last seven years in Amsterdam. With a signature of rooted groove in combination with well-tempered outbursts, Sunmi has placed herself strongly in the Dutch jazz scene. By approaching the moment in a somewhat meditative fashion, she achieves the ability to bring something entirely original to the bandstand. She is the winner of the Dutch Jazz Competition 2018 and the 2nd Prize of the Getxo International Jazz Competition 2017 (Sun-Mi Hong Quintet), She will be releasing a new album with her quintet called 'Second Page: A Self-Strewn Portrait' in March 2020. after the debut album released in 2017 (The First Page) consisting entirely of original music, reflects that. Sun-Mi marks dramatic and emotional variation, from sensitivity and minimalism to wildness and groove.
Harmen Fraanje is a pianist, composer, and educator from the Netherlands. He leads and co-leads several projects like his solo project, trio Reijseger Fraanje Sylla, a quartet with Magic Malik, Brice Soniano and Toma Gouband, a new duo with Norwegian trumpet player Arve Henriksen, a trio with Finnish musicians Aino Peltomaa on voice and Mikko Perkola on viola da gamba and a duo with Dutch guitarist Anton Goudsmit. These groups mostly perform original works with a lot of space for improvisation. Harmen collaborated with the likes of Ambrose Akinmusire, Mark Turner, Kenny Wheeler, Arve Henriksen, Thomas Morgan, Tony Malaby, Han Bennink, Ernst Reijseger, Trygve Seim, Jesse van Ruller, Magic Malik, Nelson Veras, Theo Bleckmann, Ben Monder, Enrico Rava, Werner Herzog, Trio Mediaeval, Hein van de Geyn, Perico Sambeat, Igor Roma, Louis Moholo, Ferenc Kovács, Rudi Mahall, Cristina Branco. According to the internationally acclaimed website AllAboutJazz “Harmen Fraanje is emerging as one of the most impressive young European pianists of the past decade.”
