If you think that the tempo is important to differentiate the flamenco palos, watch this video!
Very often, we associate a tempo with a palo: soleá is very slow, alegría is fast, bulería is very fast... And if I ask you: what is the difference between soleá and bulería por soleá? Or the difference between tiento and tangos? I imagine you'll answer: the speed or rather tempo: soleá is slower than Bulería por soleá, Tiento is slower than Tango.
But is tempo really so important, so determining? Is it really part of the essence, of the identity of a palo? And can we always rely on the tempo to recognize a palo?
Relying on tempo to identify palos or differentiate between palos, first, can be misleading, but most importantly: it's a superficial way of understanding palos and flamenco in general. Tha'ts why I put the tempo in the "tips and tricks" category, or "false shortcuts", because things are a bit more complex, and interesting than that. And that's what we're going to see together in this video.
