Took my one year old son and his grandpa out to the Sacramento Deep Water Channel to catch some bluegills. Grampy uses a walker, so this is one of the accessible spots to fish from in Sacramento, the other being William Pond. He hadn't caught a fish in years, due to his health, so he was excited to get out and catch something.

Although it was the middle of winter (New Years Eve, 2017) and cold, we were able to catch over a dozen blue gills. I kept the small ones for bait and will deep fry the larger ones for a nice and tasty meal.


The set up today was 12 lb flurocarbon line, set up in a drop shot rig with a 1 ounce disc sinker at the bottom. The bait we used were jumbo red worms, which seemed to attract all of the bluegill. We often had hits seconds after the sinker hit the bottom of the water.

Sunfish live in deeper water in the winter, and closer to the bottom, so the trick is to get your bait out there as far as possible and as close to the bottom as possible. Thus, I use the 1-ounce sinker to cast darn near to the middle of the channel and set up the drop shot rig so the bait practically sits on the bottom. Within seconds of hitting the bottom, you'll feel the sun fish nibbling at your bait. The larger blue gills will swallow the worm whole, while the smaller ones nibble at the exposed parts of the worm. Either way, if you set the hook, you'll get the panfish onto your hook and reel him in!

Grampy had success casting not as far as I did, so together, we covered the entire range from the bank to the middle of the Sacramento Deep Water Channel.

The bait we used today were jumbo red worms, because they were available at the store down the street. You can use other baits, such as waxworms, mealworms, maggots, grubs and crickets.
