Discover the magic of Tasmania’s most iconic walk: The Dove Lake Circuit. Nestled at the foot of the majestic Cradle Mountain, the Dove Lake Circuit is a premier 6km loop that offers some of the most breathtaking wilderness scenery in Australia. This trail takes you through a diverse range of Tasmanian landscapes, from the ancient, moss-covered Ballroom Forest to the glacially-carved Glacier Rock and the world-famous Dove Lake Boatshed.


Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a family looking for a memorable day out, this walk is a must-do. This is considered one of Tasmania’s "60 Great Short Walks."

Hike Overview:
Distance: 6km (3.7 miles) circuit.

Start Point: Dove Lake Carpark (access via the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre shuttle).

Time Taken: 2–3 hours at a leisurely pace.

Difficulty: Grade 2–3 (mostly flat boardwalks with some moderate stairs and rocky sections).

Best Route: It is highly recommended to walk clockwise. This direction offers the best reveals of Cradle Mountain and eases you into the steeper sections.

Important Things to Consider:
Weather: Tasmania’s alpine weather is notoriously fickle. It is common to experience "four seasons in one day." Always pack a high-quality waterproof jacket, thermal layers, a beanie, and gloves—even in summer.

Food & Water: There are no kiosks or shelters on the track. Carry at least 1.5L of water and high-energy snacks. For a full meal, enjoy a picnic at the Dove Lake viewing shelter before or after your walk.


Park Pass: A valid Tasmania National Parks pass is required. You can purchase this at the Visitor Centre before hopping on the shuttle bus.
