Hilairy Hartnett, a biogeochemist and professor at ASU’s School of Earth and Space Exploration and School of Molecular Sciences, explores the interaction between chemical, biological and geological systems. Hartnett’s background is in oceanography where she has conducted research on ocean systems and saltwater to the driest deserts on the planet in the Atacama of Chile. Hartnett also teaches a 300-level course in oceanography for the bachelor’s degree programs in Earth and environmental sciences offered online. ASU offers both a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Earth and environmental science online. “This degree in Earth and environmental sciences really takes the Earth systems perspective on environmental science,” Hartnett said. “We want students to understand how humans interact with their environment. What are the chemical, physical, biological processes that influence environments?”
