Dear friends, this time I spent nearly 10 days traveling around Qinghai and Gansu.

The journey was hard and long.

Qinghai Province and Gansu Province in China

Qinghai is a province in Northwest China. It is located south of the Republic of Mongolia, east of Xinjiang, and north of Tibet. It is one of China's least populous and least densely populated provinces with under six million people in an area somewhat larger than France.

Qinghai is a large, sparsely populated Chinese province spread across the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau.

It's a place of strong Tibetan and Mongol cultural traditions.

Qinghai's important Buddhist monasteries include Wutong, whose monks are renowned producers of thangka, religious paintings on cotton or silk.

For centuries Gansu was the vital corridor between China and Central Asia: there passed almost 1600-kilometre section of the Silk Road.

The province was considered the “gold sector” of that international route. As a proof you will see numerous ancient monuments scattered along the entire Silk Road - temples, monasteries, pagodas, towers and ancient palaces.

Besides, the province has a considerable part of the Great Wall of China, whose ruins can impress you with their sizes.

Emerald Lake

Located in Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province in northwest China, there is a lake which has beautiful emerald colored water.

Looking from an aerial view, it is like a delicate jewel inlay in the broad ground.

The Emerald Lake is a salt lake locates at an altitude of 3,000 meters on the plateau. It covers six square kilometers in total, and famous for its marvelous emerald color of water which is the reason why it is named for.

This lake used to be a mining area. After years of mining, the water mixed up with a high concentration of salt and became brine. Different minerals alongside with the crystal of salt reflect the light, making up this miracle.

China is a country which is rich in salt lakes. The four main areas of salt lake distributions are the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Qinghai Province, Tibet Autonomous Region and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Mingsha Mountain Nature Park

The Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake Nature Park is a popular attraction in Dunhuang to explore stunning desert scenery and take part in exciting sand dunes activities. The park consists of the Mingsha Mountain and the Crescent Lake surrounded by sand dunes of Mingsha Mountains. Dunhuang is also known as Shazhou (Town of Sand) in ancient time. This is how it gained the name.

For people who want to take a short stay in desert, the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake Nature Park is the best choice. It is close to the downtown of Dunhuang, without the harsh and extreme climate and convenient facilities are equipped. The easy walking trails allow different ages of tourists to explore the desert. Besides, many interesting sand dunes activities are available if you want to try something exciting.

Now, at the Mingsha ('Singing Sand') Mountains, you can enjoy the beautiful wavy shapes of the smooth yellow dunes against the deep blue sky, listen to the shifting sand, and imagine you are traveling the ancient Silk Road.

Qinghai Lake

Qinghai Lake, also known as Kokonor and Chinghai Lake, is China’s largest inland lake and saline lake with enchanting natural beauty and uncountable species of birds. There are enough to explore in Qinghai Lake and it is never exaggerated to call it Flowers’ Ocean, Birds’ Paradise and Cyclists’ Heaven. Besides, it also holds great Buddhist significance and it is a sacred lake for Tibet Buddhist pilgrims.
