Held between 12 and 23 May 2022, the 31st edition of the Southeast Asian Games marked the second time that it is being held in Vietnam. Initially scheduled to be taken place in 2021, it was rescheduled to May 2022 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country at the time, and that move caused by this continuing health crisis makes this edition the very latest, by time frame, in the Games' 63-year history of existence.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have both submitted their bid to host the 2021 Games. While Ho Chi Minh City was initially favored to stage this regional sporting meet, Hanoi is deemed to be the prioritized location due to its existing sporting facilities, particularly some of the venues that were built for the 2003 SEA Games.

This came after the then-Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng ordered provinces and cities to not build new facilities for sporting events so as to cut costs, following its withdrawal from hosting the Asian Games in 2019 (this Asiad was eventually re-attributed to Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia and then moved back to 2018) citing financial restraints.

The Vietnamese government, in 2018, have picked Hanoi to stage the SEA Games, and on 13 November 2019, just weeks before that year's edition in the Philippines, Vietnamese prime minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc signed a decision that approved Hanoi hosting the event. Despite the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to 2021, organizers are still optimistic that the Games would go on from late November to early December of 2021, but it was not until rising COVID-19 cases in the country had ultimately impacted the event, and the organizers had no choice to reschedule them for 2022.

Over 5,400 athletes from 11 countries across the region were present in Hanoi for the rescheduled SEA Games, and this edition had featured 40 medal sports with 522 events.

Just like last time in 2003, Vietnam emerges in the medal tally as the overall winners of these Games, racking out 205 golds (the most by any country thus far) along with 125 silvers and 106 bronzes for a total of 446 medals of any color. The hosts are then followed by Thailand and Indonesia, with the Philippines and Singapore rounding out the top five.
