Freightliner has just taken a big step forward by introducing the fifth generation of its Cascadia truck, part of Daimler Truck North America. This latest version of the popular truck continues the legacy that has made the Cascadia a leader in the industry for medium- and heavy-duty transport. With the launch of this new generation, Freightliner has added advanced safety systems, enhanced aerodynamics, and some powerful business intelligence tools aimed at boosting profitability.

According to David Carson, who is the senior vice president of sales and marketing at Daimler Truck North America, the Cascadia has already sold over a million units since it first hit the roads in 2007. This milestone makes it the most driven Class 8 truck on highways across North America. When designing the fifth generation, Freightliner carefully listened to feedback from customers, drivers, and fleet managers. Carson explained that they focused on what their customers really needed—improved safety features, better efficiency, and an increase in profitability.

Enhanced Safety for Drivers and Fleets

Freightliner’s fifth-generation Cascadia comes equipped with significant upgrades in its safety technology. The truck’s Detroit Assurance safety suite now includes expanded features that are designed to offer greater protection on the road. One standout feature is **Active Brake Assist 6**, which not only detects moving vehicles but can now automatically apply brakes if it spots stationary or stopped vehicles at awkward angles, around curves, or across multiple lanes. It also recognizes both moving and still pedestrians.

Another safety improvement is the addition of *Active Lane Assist 2**, which now offers **Lane Change Assist**. This function can prevent the truck from entering a lane that is already occupied by another vehicle by applying counter-steering to keep the truck in its lane. In combination with this, **Attentive Driver Protection with Lane Keep Assist* monitors the driver’s steering input. If the system detects that the driver is not paying attention or is unresponsive, it can guide the truck back to the center of its lane, slow it down, and activate hazard lights.

Other improvements include **Side Guard Assist 2**, which can now detect objects on both sides of the vehicle, from the driver’s side to the end of the trailer, providing an additional layer of security. Also new to this version is the **Intelligent Braking Control System**, which introduces brake-by-wire technology along with backup pneumatic systems. This advanced braking system helps control brake force, manage wear on the brake linings, and provide more stable braking, especially in emergency situations.

Efficiency Boosts Through Aerodynamics

Over the years, Freightliner has made steady progress in improving the fuel efficiency of the Cascadia model. Since its introduction, the truck has become 35 percent more fuel-efficient. The fifth generation builds on this progress with further aerodynamic enhancements, resulting in an additional 1.9 percent improvement in fuel economy. Some of these changes include a newly designed hood, a reworked A-pillar deflector, and a new bumper design that helps direct airflow more efficiently around the tires and under the body of the truck.

The truck also offers a *Max Aero Bumper* option for even more efficiency. Importantly, this new bumper does not compromise the truck’s ground clearance, durability, or ease of maintenance.

Powerful Engines to Meet Various Needs

The new Cascadia will offer a range of engine options that are powerful and fuel-efficient. At launch, it will include the Detroit DD13 and DD15 engines, delivering up to 505 horsepower and 1,850 pound-feet of torque. Looking ahead, Freightliner will also offer the Cummins X15 and X15N engines, the latter being the first natural gas engine designed specifically for heavy-duty applications.

Smarter Technology for Business

To improve fleet management and uptime, the new Cascadia is packed with advanced technology. The *Detroit Connect* telematics platform has been updated to offer even better real-time.
