I found this sharpener new in box on ebay, and I was excited to try this older model to see if the older model was better than the newer ones. Well, it is better and was built sturdier. Behind the selector dial is a metal plate, and I noticed it was smoother to turn the dial, whereas the newer one is harder to turn. The gears sound smoother and maybe a little quieter than the new one, and of course, it does sharpen slower, but sharpens smoother and produces longer needle like points, verses the newer one producing flat stubby points.
